International Citizen Service (ICS)
About International Citizen Service (ICS)
ICS is a development programme that brings together young people from the UK and developing countries to volunteer in some of the poorest communities in Africa, Asia and Latin America. ICS is run by VSO, the ethical volunteering experts, in partnership with respected development organisations.
Spending 10 - 12 weeks on placement, working with in country volunteers and living with a host family all adds to this amazing experience at no cost to you.
There are lots of companies offering volunteering opportunities abroad for young people. But our volunteer placements are not run for profit or tourism. All placements are fully funded by the UK Department for International Development, the government ministry leading the UK's work to end extreme poverty.
As an VSO ICS volunteer this means that you'll only work on projects that are genuinely helping communities lift themselves out of poverty. Projects that aim to:
- Lower youth unemployment
- Grow small businesses
- Increase access to education
- Give young people more influence
- Raise awareness of health issues
- Tackle climate change
ICS makes the most of the unique contribution young people can bring to development – passion, energy and the ability to reach other young people.
All of our projects are carefully planned to be sustainable and focussed on long term impact. Placements are always part of a wider development programme, where objectives are set in partnership with communities.
This programme isn't a holiday. It's demanding but hugely rewarding. It's a great opportunity for personal development, a stepping stone to future careers and a chance to make your world a better place. The skills, knowledge and personal growth you obtain through the ICS programme is invaluable. Take the challenge and apply today.
