You don’t need cash, skills or qualifications to apply for ICS – just the ambition to make a difference.

Personal and professional development

ICS is a development programme that brings together young people from the UK and developing countries to volunteer in some of the poorest communities in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

UK volunteers work side-by-side with local volunteers in developing countries while staying with host families, this ensures you are an integral part of the local community.

ICS isn't a holiday. It's demanding but hugely rewarding. You will be working with overseas projects and partners who will make the most of your energy and passion.

It's a great opportunity for personal development, a stepping stone to future careers and a chance to make your world a better place.

Projects and roles vary on the ICS programme, but VSO ICS volunteers work on projects that are genuinely helping communities lift themselves out of poverty.

Projects that aim to:

  • Lower youth unemployment
  • Grow small businesses
  • Increase access to education
  • Give young people more influence
  • Raise awareness of health issues
  • Tackle climate change

We ask our volunteers to commit to 10-12 week placements as we know it takes time to understand a community and its issues.

More Information

You don’t have to pay to volunteer with VSO ICS as the cost of ICS is met by the Government, but we do ask that volunteers fundraise. This demonstrates your commitment to the programme. All volunteers receive one-to-one support from professional volunteers with lots of practical tips and materials to help you enjoy fundraising and smash your target.

The programme is led by VSO and we offer structured support and training to help and guide you before, during and after your overseas placement. This means that volunteers can support ICS projects effectively and understand how they contribute to a wider programme of development work.
