Craft Apprenticeship Scheme
Western Power Distribution (WPD) owns and operates the electricity distribution system in the Midlands, the South West of England and South Wales. This system consists of underground cables, overhead lines and substations serving over 7.8 million customers.
We are looking for talented, highly motivated people to join the WPD Craft Apprenticeship Scheme to become Craftspeople who operate at the forefront of the business. This role would suit you if you enjoy working in a team environment, in the outdoors and would be interested in a long term career with the leading electricity distribution business in the UK.
Our Craftspeople are highly trained and operate at the sharp end of our business. They are divided into three main groups:
- Overhead Lines – working on overhead lines supported by wooden poles or steel towers.
- Jointer – working on the underground cable network.
- Fitter – working on switches and transformers in substations.
We offer competitive terms and conditions of employment with excellent career prospects. The core training takes a minimum of two years. You will be required to achieve the City & Guilds 2339 Level 2 and Level 3 Qualifications in Electrical Technology Engineering, delivered through Manchester Open Learning.
You will need to keep a Technical Apprenticeship Record (TAR) Portfolio which has a significant impact on the overall qualification. Your first nine weeks will take place at one of our Training Centres.
You should have or expect to achieve, at least five GCSE passes at Grade C or above in Maths, English Language and one Science subject. Alternatively you will have an equivalent Level 3 recognised qualification in Electrical Engineering.
Literacy and computer skills will be required as you will need to keep a hand written record of your work, as well as undertake work using Microsoft Office applications. You will be required to provide proof of your qualifications in the form of the original certificates.
