Milkround's first Employer Parents Evening!

On Thursday 9th March 2017, Milkround School Leavers partnered with Aldi to host their first Employer Parents Evening.

An audience of parents spent their evening at the Milkround HQ in Southwark, with a range of the UK’s top school leaver employers to learn about the apprenticeship opportunities available to their children.

The evening began with a networking session, where parents had the chance to find out about the many opportunities available amongst employers and ask those all-important questions! The event then moved on to an introduction to Milkround School Leavers, presented by Francesca Parkinson, Milkround’s Head of Marketing. This was followed by a presentation from Kathryn and Laura at Aldi, which gave everyone a fantastic insight into Aldi’s Academy.

The first panel session of the evening saw representatives from IBM, ICAEW, Goldman Sachs, Laing O’Rourke and Deloitte. This panel discussed issues surrounding career progression, competition and drop-out rates in the apprenticeship market. The upcoming Apprenticeship Levy was also a focus, with employers addressing how it may potentially cause changes in their schemes and applications.

The second panel of the evening included employers from Grant Thornton, EY, Aldi and ACCA, who gave a valuable insight into the qualities that they look for in potential apprentices, as well as the skills an apprentice will gain through their programmes.

The evening ended with a Q&A session with Holly and Safwan, two current apprentices from Goldman Sachs and EY. Holly and Safwan both spoke about their application process, their belief that apprenticeships were an excellent alternative to university and what their ambitious goals for the future involve.

One parent spoke with great enthusiasm about the event- “Every parent should be informed about alternatives to university. My son was unsure about routes after school, but now he is certain about doing an apprenticeship!”
